September 15-19, 2024 – Honolulu, Hawai'i

Conserving Fishes and Fishing Traditions through Knowledge Co-Production

Co-hosted by the AFS Western Division and the Pacific Islands Chapter

Preliminary Call for Proposals – Symposia and Workshops

The American Fisheries Society (AFS), President Cecil Jennings, the AFS Western Division, and AFS Pacific Islands Chapter are excited to host the 154th AFS Annual Meeting, September 15-19, 2024 in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The theme “Conserving Fishes and Fishing Traditions through Knowledge Co-Production” will stimulate a wide range of sessions focusing on the past, present, and future of fisheries conservation and management as we bring together professionals from across North America, the Pacific Islands, and countries throughout the world. The Honolulu Program Committee invites proposals for symposia, workshop/continuing education courses, and innovative sessions that support the theme and look to advance the fisheries profession. Scientific sessions will be in-person but we anticipate there may be options for self-funded hybrid sessions.

Symposium Proposals

An organized symposium will contain a series of integrated presentations organized around a single topic or theme. The goal of these sessions is to provide a forum for focused discussions on new and emerging topics or innovative applications of established approaches. Symposia proposals are encouraged to address the meeting theme, though this is not mandatory. Symposium proposals should be submitted to the Honolulu symposium submission portal when it opens later this year or early next year. Please contact the Program and Symposia Chair, Julie Carter, [email protected], for questions related to symposium topics and submission. The final symposium submission deadline is February 23, 2024.

 Innovative Session Proposals

The Program Committee encourages organizers to submit creative proposals for sessions that use engaging design, approaches, and formats. These proposals could include panel discussions, lightning/speed presentation sessions, slam sessions, or other interactive and non-traditional sessions. Innovative session proposals should be submitted to the Honolulu symposium submission portal when it opens later this year or early next year. Please contact the Program and Symposia Chair, Julie Carter, [email protected] for questions related to session topics and submission. The final submission deadline is February 23, 2024.

Workshop/Contributed Education Course Proposals

Pre-conference workshop/continuing education courses will be offered onsite as half-day, full-day, or two-day sessions. Courses should be designed to offer in-depth professional development that is of interest to a variety of participants, ranging from students to professionals, or specific audiences. Information on submitting workshop/continuing education proposals will be posted online later this year or early next year. Please contact Lauren Maza, [email protected], for questions related to workshop/continuing education proposal topics and submission.

Session proposal submission will open in December 2023.
